Embassy of Canada lecture
report

On January15th, the Canadian Embassy gave a lecture at our school.

From the Canadian Embassy, the Second Secretary of Public Affairs, Ms. Christine Callahan taught our students the good points of having so much cultural diversity in Canada.

The lecture was given in English, and the students listened intently to Ms. Callahan talking about various topics ranging from the history of immigrants immigrating Canada, the formation of Canada, gender equality, and efforts taken to ensure that the LGBTI community in Canada is treated fairly.

Canada is proud of its diversity and various policies and approaches for respecting all cultures. She explained public opinions while using data and concrete examples.

Student Voices

· I didn’t have an image of Canada being such a multi-national country, so Ms. Callahan’s enthusiasm for those people who seriously face human rights problems was transmitted during her lecture. In Japan, there are many measures to eliminate age boundaries, but I think that we have to aim to eliminate more serious boundaries faced by people all over the world. Immigration can contribute to our economy, so I think positive thinking is a very nice idea.

· This was not the first time that I have heard that Canada is very diverse and generous to its citizens. I think that Japan is not very aggressive in accepting immigrants, and that is because we tend to focus on the negatives of accepting people who are different into our country. Crimes did not increase in Canada, even though they accepted so many immigrants so I think it is better to focus on the positives like Canada rather than refusing immigrants from the beginning like Japan.
