Four representatives of Blue Peco visited East Timor on a Fair Trade Coffee Study Tour that was conducted from August 5th to August 12th.
The students who participated in the visit to East Timor are a part of a student independent learning group named Blue Peco. Blue Peco is supporting and promoting fair trade in Japan, and our students got the opportunity to experience what the coffee farmer’s lives are like in the highlands of East Timor.
Even though the altitude was very high and the area lacks many facilities, the students were very impressed with the farmers who continue to grow and process a top quality coffee.
In addition, we visited a local elementary school to interact with those farmers’ children.
Lastly, our students visited a community center where they could talk with locals and saw the “Community Dialogue”. The people talked about their community seriously, which shows us how East Timor is getting over their painful experience from the civil war.
