DAY 1 and DAY 2
Global Showcase, F.O.R. Group, Philippines Program, Blue Peco
【Global WeekⅠ】
report

Day 1 and Day 2events took place during lunchtime and after school

Global Showcase

The Global Showcase was held in the open space of the second floor entrance hall, and presented an overview of all the groups and their activities. The first part of the showcase saw all of the student-lead groups and giving three-four minute poster presentations simultaneously. This format allowed students who were attending to both move around freely and to broaden their understanding of the groups’ activities. During the second part of the showcase, the groups took turns giving brief (approximately 90 seconds each) presentations to provide additional information on their activities. Using Google Classroom to share their thoughts after the showcase was finished gave participating students a further opportunity to reflect on what they had learned.

Goals and/or activities of the groups which took part in the Global Showcase are:

  • Supporting Asia Christian Education Fund (ACEF) projects in Bangladesh through sales at various events

  • Providing a chance to remember and learn more about the 3/11 disaster and the school’s Miyako Visit Program

  • Exploring the possibility of each homeroom in the school (One Class, One Child) financially supporting a child in the Philippines

  • Educating students on Japan’s food waste and issues connected to the increasing poverty

  • Learning more about and supporting East Timor in its economic development and literacy empowerment

  • Learning about the role of groups such as Free The Children Japan in efforts to globally protect the rights of children

F.O.R.

The F.O.R. Group held an after-school session focusing on the 3/11 disaster and reconstruction efforts over the past 8 years since the disaster. The session helped our students (who were of primary school age when the incident happened) understand more about the disaster.

The Philippines Program

The Philippines Program members gave a heartfelt report during the lunch-break on their trip to the Philippines this past March and on the work of the NPO Child Fund Japan, which links our high school to the children in the Philippines we support. Over 120 students were in attendance, with even more not being able to fit in the room because of its capacity. As the program members openly and sometimes tearfully shared their thoughts and struggles, some students who attended later commented that the report not only helped them see the impact of our school’s support, but also that the sponsored children’s happiness and love for their families made our students want to be more involved in the program.

Blue Peco

This after-school event focused on explaining the specific activities of Blue Peco, a student-initiated and student-led group in relation to East Timor. As students learned about and took notes on how to make and then got to sample the fair-trade coffee from East Timor, they also learned about fair-trade’s history and integral connection to the country’s efforts in establishing sustainable educational and economic policies.
